for those who've been following along with this thread, i'm sure you've seen that it's been quite a ride!
once the mstdn-ebooks import functionality is done, i'll be shutting down my paid hosting service after a week. this means i'm cutting off the income source i mainly use to pay for the server.
if you'd like to donate, you can do so here:
https://patreon.com/Lynnesbian
https://paypal.com/Lynnesbian
https://ko-fi.com/Lynnesbianthere are currently no donor benefits, although patreon pledgers (to any tier) will get early access to my lynne teaches tech posts.
thanks for considering!

okay!! fedibooks is now live and in what you might call early access.
i don't know how well it's going to hold up, because i haven't been able to do much serious testing on it, but i guess we'll all find out together!!

a new intel-specific CPU vulnerability has been discovered: https://www.cyberus-technology.de/posts/2019-05-14-zombieload.html
quick facts:
- can be used to leak data between processes, hyperthreads, SGX enclaves, etc
- effects core and xeon CPUs
- CPUs with meltdown mitigations are less effected, but still vulnerable
- this is a hardware issue - OS independent
- can be mitigated by disabling hyperthreading
- proof of concept - one thread is able to access URLs typed into firefox (a different thread) -

"why's does it show as apple.com?" you might ask
well:URLs don't actually support many characters. you can have example.com, but not пример.com. but what if you don't use the latin alphabet? well, you can use punycode. it allows you to store non-latin text in a special format. for example, https://www.xn--80ak6aa92e.com/ is actually an encoding using cyrillic letters that look very similar to "apple". this can be used for good (such as having URLs in your native language) and for bad (such as this proof of concept, which could be used for an actual attack). some browsers support this, some don't. newer versions of chrome have specifically disabled the fake apple.com, while firefox leaves it on.

have you ever noticed that someone post a screenshot of text without providing an image description, preventing you from being able to read it? or maybe they posted a huge amount of text that just can't possibly be described with the image description feature?
simply tag @OCRbot in a direct reply to the image. it will download the image and scan it using tesseract OCR to output the text contained in the image!
because OCRbot runs on fedi.lynnesbian.space, it has a character limit of 65535, so even the longest images should work OK!
check the reply to this image to see it parsing the attached screenshot!

"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.

you wanna create a slideshow? you use your pentium, you're gonna get about 20% slideshow. i3 7th gen pretty good gets you about 80-90%. now an i7 8th gen? that's just under 200% slideshow. imagine being able to make that much of slideshow power

the last time i visited america i slid on discarded litter, tripped over the massive homeless population, crashed through the window of 18.6m vacant homes, got shot, got run over by a moped, collapsed on the ground and got kicked for being trans, called the ambulance and got charged $30,000, and then the ambulence driver shot me while everyone clapped. this message took 17 hours to post from my Comcast™ internet
