    When you're posting hashtags that contain multiple words, it's a good idea to capitalise the first letter of each word. This helps blind people who use screen reader software to know what the hashtag actually says.

    For example #DogsOfMastodon is much easier for screen reader users than #dogsofmastodon, even though they're technically the same tag.

    This kind of capitalisation is usually known as "CamelCase". CamelCase doesn't just help blind people, it also makes hashtags clearer for sighted people too!

    Using CamelCase won't affect your post's visibility (because searches ignore capitalisation) but it will improve the post's accessibility, so you'll get more people reading it.

    If you updated to the latest telegram version and found yourself annoyed with the extra #a11y regressions, at least when it comes to flicking through messages I find the focus jumps only if you're swiping left. Scrolling back and then swiping right to read through works more consistently.

    @tychi @celia sounds more like a stab against the not so semantic web because reader mode allows you to bypass cookie disclaimer and tracking and often also a paywall so it's not in the interest of major publications that reader mode works.

    Who cares about #a11y if you can serve more ads instead?

    The Fediverse has lots of blind and partially-sighted users who rely on audio screen reader software to tell them what is going on.

    Here's how to make your posts more suitable for screen readers:

    -Use CamelCase on hashtags, where each new word has a capital letter, for example #DogsOfMastodon instead of #dogsofmastodon. CamelCase makes it much easier for screen readers to see the different words and read them out properly.

    -Don't use long groups of emoji all next to each other, these are really irritating to hear read out loud.

    -Add text descriptions to images and videos before you post them. Do this by attaching the file and clicking "edit" before you post it, then add the description.

    p.s. The Mastodon bug where CamelCase hashtags were being accidentally replaced has now been fixed (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/16460).

    How can I easily tell (on a phone) if an image has alt text or not on Mastodon. Would be great if Mastodon visibly flagged images that don’t have alt text with a warning in the interface so we know not to boost posts that don’t have it.

    In #2MB #MineRacer #audiogames, I made it to position 1 on the time scoreboard, and position 1 on the points scoreboard, my total time was 7 minutes and 23 seconds! I scored 922773 points, jumped 30 pits, ducked 30 stalactites, and collected 239 coins! I ended my adventure at the bottom of a pit!
    This is the first run on a fresh installation of the Slint #GNU #Linux distribution. I did this installation using a release candidate, not yet made public. Slint is based on the #salix system. Though it is a general-purpose distro, Slint comes, fresh from the factory, with nearly all #a11y applications and configurations, a #blind or visually-impaired person could wan

    My mom sent me an early birthday present--the Sanjean PRD-17. It's an AM-FM portable radio, designed for the visually-impaired. It features tactile markings on the controls, and spoken prompts for all actions. I've had the thing a couple of days, and like it. As I promised some friends and family, I recorded an audio "tour" of the radio.

    Big changes to #orca #screenreader vis vis #firefox Time to pull again and rebuild Master? #a11y I'm concerned that many of these look like per-website fixes/work-arounds. An accumulation of these will make orca's gecko support an unwieldy mess; is this really the best practice? Maybe it's time to blame web authors for making these ad hok things necessary?

    I had to use a usb headset, to get an eyes-free install of #Debian Bullseye onto my Probook. The sound on the installer medium did not work, otherwise. Now that the install is done, sound is fine. That is, I can use any headset or the machine's own speakers for normal use.

    The Orca screen reader already describes structures like block quotes and lists, and their nesting levels. Just mark things up properly, and you shouldn't have trouble. If possible, use a screen reader to read your content, and check that is spoken as you intend.
